Free with a medical card or GP visit card
- The rule
- The service is free when you show your valid medical card or GP visit card. If you do not have a card you are charged a fee.
- Who can get a card
- Anyone aged 8 to 69 can apply for a GP visit card; over-70s, carers on Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance and children under 8 can register for one. If you have a medical card, you do not need a GP visit card.

Children under 8
All children under 8 living in Ireland can get a GP visit card, and it covers out-of-hours urgent GP care. Your child must live in Ireland and intend to live here for at least a year. You register online with your PPS number, your child’s PPS number and your GP’s name. If your child has a medical card, you do not need to register. Medication costs and hospital charges are not covered.

Show the card, or pay
- Bring the card
- Caredoc, NEDOC, KDOC, TLC Doc and DubDoc say you pay if you cannot show a valid card at the consultation.
- Applied, not yet received
- Caredoc and NEDOC charge a child whose under-8 card has been applied for but has not arrived.
- Refunds
- KDOC and TLC Doc refund a medical card holder who paid and later shows a card that was valid on the day. D Doc refunds if you call within seven days, less a €20 administration fee.
